What is Chainlink ?

Chainlink

Chainlink is a decentralized oracle system.

Since the creation of Ethereum and the growing use of decentralized applications in 2017, smart-contracts are gradually proving their usefulness.

The consequences are wide-ranging, affecting finance, insurance, governance methods, etc.

What problem is Chainlink trying to solve?

Whereas the execution of smart-contracts is predictable and unavoidable.

Indeed, there are points of weakness for functions that require data external to the blockchain.

The role of oracles is to bridge the gap between the « real » world and that of the blockchain, by injecting external data when applications need it.

If an application relies on a single oracle to supply it with data, then that oracle can easily inject erroneous data.

How can Chainlink solve this problem?

Chainlink allows you to call on a network of independent oracles, each of which is responsible for providing a specific piece of data.

By synthesizing all the results supplied via the Chainlink protocol, the end user benefits from a high level of certainty regarding the accuracy of the data ultimately injected into the autonomous contract.

History

Created in 2017 like many virtual currencies, LINK had been launched at an estimated price of €0.19 on November 9 of that year.
Starting its adventure slowly on the market, Chainlink had seen its price reach its all-time low a few days later.
On November 29, 2017, the LINK price was in fact around €0.125.
This was followed by several periods of rising prices, which enabled LINK to post its first record at €16.14 on August 16, 2020, before seeing its price increase by more than 360% over the start of 2021.
The all-time high for the Chainlink price was reached on May 10, 2021, when 1 LINK was worth €43.32.
From its inception to 2022, the Chainlink price has risen by over 10,000%! On September 11, 2024, the LINK price was €9.39.

Who are the founders of Chainlink

Chainlink was founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis in 2017.
Sergey Nazarov is a serial entrepreneur with a background in blockchain startups and smart contracts.
Prior to Chainlink, he co-founded several companies in the cryptocurrency space, including SmartContract.com, which laid the foundation for Chainlink.
Steve Ellis, co-founder and CTO of Chainlink, is an experienced software engineer who worked at Pivotal Labs and also co-founded SmartContract.com with Nazarov.
Together, they developed Chainlink to connect smart contracts to real-world data through a decentralized network of oracles, addressing a crucial need for interoperability and reliability in the blockchain ecosystem.

Who are the investors of Chainlink

Chainlink has attracted investments from major funds specializing in blockchain, such as Framework Ventures, Outlier Ventures, and Lemniscap.
These investors believe in Chainlink’s ability to transform smart contracts by enabling them to access reliable external data via a network of decentralized oracles.
By backing Chainlink, they see significant potential in extending the interoperability and reliability of smart contracts, which is crucial for the adoption of blockchain technologies in various sectors, including decentralized finance (DeFi) and beyond.

Why invest in Chainlink

Chainlink (LINK) is crucial to smart contracts, providing decentralized oracles for secure access to real-world data.
Its technology is widely adopted in the decentralized finance (DeFi), insurance and gaming sectors, with numerous partnerships strengthening its position.
By using the LINK token for payments and guarantees within its network, Chainlink is aligning demand for its services with the token’s valuation, offering a solid investment opportunity in a key pillar of the blockchain ecosystem.
